Situated in Glasgow’s chic West End, Òran Mór is a renovated church opened in 2004 featuring two restaurant’s two bars and a nightclub. Its name, in Scots Gaelic meaning “great melody of life” or “big song” is well chosen for this vibrant and welcoming venue. Òran Mór hosts a number of events, from weekly club nights, music concerts, comedy gigs and its hugely successful “A play, A pie, and A pint” - This lunchtime theatre programme runs twice a year and features new emerging talent as well as some of the country’s best known stage stars such as Robbie Coltrane, Elaine C. Smith and Karen Dunbar.
Òran Mór’s dedicated restaurant, the Brasserie provides a relaxed dining environment in which to enjoy top-class contemporary cuisine with a traditionally Scottish angle. The restaurant provides lunch, pre-theatre and a la carte menus as well as an impressive list of refreshing cocktails featuring popular drinks and Òran Mór originals. The John Muir Room (incorporated into Òran Mór’s two bars) acts as the venue’s second restaurant serving equally mouth-watering traditional and innovative Scottish dishes.
Whiskey lovers often view Scotland as a sort of pilgrimage and the West End’s Òran Mór supplies for such demand in their Whisky Bar, behind which over 250 different malts are available. The Whisky bar is opened for 9am (begins serving alcohol at 11am or 12.30pm on Sundays due to licensing laws) until 11pm and the humble yet traditionally stylish bar is an ideal destination for breakfast, a quick lunch or dinner. The bar also hosts the weekly Thursday night Quiz between 9 and 11pm, with prizes including beer, wine, concert tickets and a rollover cash prize for the winning team. In addition to this the Brasserie by night evolves into a stylish bar serving drinks from cocktails to champagne until 3am.
As night takes over Òran Mór becomes “Club O” with club nights held every Thursday through to Saturday with a selection of resident and visiting DJs filling the dance floor until the early hours. Òran Mór also features an auditorium and private dining room, which can be booked for corporate and private functions including weddings, as can areas of the previously mentioned bars and restaurants.
As Òran Mór is situated in the West End and McLays Guesthouse in the city centre, public transport or a taxi would be more practical although as it is around a 30 minute walk from the hotel. Guests could travel by taxi from the hotel, which would cost around £4-5 or could take the number 44 (or 44A) bus from nearby Bath St (an all day adult ticket will cost around £3.75) to University Avenue and make the ten minute walk along to Òran Mór at the end of Byres road. Hillhead underground (subway) station is only around a 5 minute walk from Òran Mór, and is 4 stops from Buchanan Street station, the nearest underground station from the hotel.
